An oldie but a goodie.

I look forward to Halloween all year, and for the first time, I went as the iconic Morticia Addams. Something about the Addams family—they transcend generations and remain en vogue year after year. You can never really go wrong dressing up as someone from their family.

But crafting something that will stand the test of time, that will remain relevant not just year to year but decade to decade is no small feat. Yet, that is what we aim to do in healthcare technology every day.

As we traveled from Civitas in LA, to Vulcan in Copenhagen, and NCQA in San Diego (getting our miles in!) I really felt that sentiment—that healthcare technology is built to last, built to remain relevant and timeless generation to generation, all while adapting to new needs.

Standards based interoperability and the data platforms that make up the inner workings of HIEs- these are parts of our industry that are synonymous with the successful sharing of information, much like the Addams family is with Halloween.

While conferences always focus discussions on “what’s next” and “how do we solve XYZ,” it was also an absolute delight to spend some time talking about what people have been able to do with technology and data, how they’ve been able to be successful, and how a really good standard, or a really good technology really will become a timeless oldie but goodie.

We’re so pleased we could celebrate these successes with everyone at the conferences!

Riding Two Horses at Once: Governing Data Quality in Both Claims and Clinical Data

NCQA recently published a blog on data governance and data quality written by J2’s Director of Professional Services and subject matter expert, Nathan Elliot! He explains that data governance and data quality are like two horses. If you want to be successful, you have to be able to trust both of them, and each has to be properly trained. Nathan explains how payers can shift their approach to data governance and for improved data quality.

Civitas 2025

Civitas is always one of our most anticipated and loved events of the year, and 2025 was no different! We came away from the week feeling absolutely energized after spending some real quality time with our friends, partners, and clients.

The conference was extra special this year as our own Executive Director of Alliances, Jen Carter, won a Civitas Community Award as a Dedicated Mentor! For all those who know Jen, this is a well-deserved award that has been earned over the past 15 years. Congratulations Jen!

Health Data Policy into Practice

After Civitas, we joined TEHDAS and HL7 Vulcan for the co-sponsored Health Data Policy into Practice event in Copenhagen. The event pulled together representatives from 29 European Union countries to work on data and interoperability challenges. HL7 Vulcan was there promoting interoperability through FHIR, their implementation guides, and various successes from their projects. Our own Chief Innovation Officer, Steve Heard, spoke on a panel about the Vulcan Interoperability Bridge project and our involvement in building a proof of concept with Manifest MedEx and InterSystems.

NCQA 2025

Last on the J2 fall tour was the NCQA conference!

Summit presenters covered a wide range of topics for provider organizations, health plans, and others involved in producing and reporting health quality measures and participating in NCQA’s accreditation and certification programs.

We met with a number of leaders at NCQ and held hallway conversations with faces both familiar and new. Major themes from the summit included the essentiality and urgency of data quality for quality measures and to support emerging technologies such as AI; NCQA’s plans to move to FHIR-aligned digital quality measures (dQM) over the next few years; payers’ need to comply with CMS 0057 Final Rule FHIR and API requirements for prior authorization in 2026.

We found our time there to be incredibly valuable and look forward to next year’s summit!
