Who’s your study buddy?

From grade school to graduate school, I was always the person everyone wanted to partner with for group projects. For all the reasons you might suspect: they knew I would do the project and they would get an A.

But then came high school physics class. I always liked physics and was quite adept at theory, but I was chronically terrible at algebra. And there is A LOT of algebra in physics.

Luckily, I was seated next to this kind, patient math nerd named Melissa, who was the only reason I passed. She helped me as I fumbled through homework, and she partnered with me on all our class projects.

The final test was a class field trip to Six Flags Great America—a 2-hour bus ride away—where we calculated the physics of six roller coasters. She had the baseline equations already worked out by the time we got to the theme park.

Whenever I have the joy of speaking with J2 architects or technical leads, I am reminded of Melissa; the intelligence, the patience, the kindness, and the “showing up to the starting line with the project 60% done” level of initiative is unparalleled!

Be sure to pick J2 for your next group project!

From Doulas to Data:
How North Carolina is Successfully Transforming Maternal Health Outcomes For Its Most Vulnerable Patients

Statistics don’t lie. Maternal and infant health outcomes for the United States dramatically lag results seen in the rest of the developed world when measured across a range of indicators.

The disparities are even greater for birthing parents of color. According to data from the CDC, Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Black infants are also two times more likely than white infants to be born with a low birthweight. These complications often lead to a cascade of costly additional medical challenges and treatments.

In this session, Drs. Tang and Urrutia from UNC, Anita Valiani from NC HIEA, and Shawn McCartt from J2 Interactive highlight the transformative work ACURE4Moms (Accountability for Care through Undoing Racism and Equity for Moms) is doing for maternal health.
