It’s always the little things in life that give us the most meaning.

Morning coffee, bright flowers, sweet treats, and furry friends.
Any day that has those four things is by all measures - a good day.
And the science on that is clear - little hits of dopamine sprinkled throughout the day do more for our mood and overall well-being than singular big hits. Scientifically, it’s the small things that add up to have the greatest impact.
That same sentiment is widespread in healthcare technology. Every line of code, every small detail in a program - they add up to pretty significant things. Like how many clicks a physician will make before getting to the data they need, or how effectively a lab will process blood work orders.
It’s a mindset my J2 colleagues all share - the keen awareness that “little” things like terminology or lines of code add up to the biggest impact for patients and clinicians. Healthcare is built on thousands of smart, careful decisions that make systems more usable, more connected, and more human.
And over time, those small improvements add up to something meaningful.

Thank you for choosing us as your partner - we look forward to every project still to come!

Bridging Borders with Data: Applying the HIE Model to the European Health Data Space

This past fall, J2 Chief Innovation Officer  Steve Heard jumped at the opportunity to join HL7 Vulcan in his spiritual home of Scandinavia for the Health Data Policy to Practice event, where European health data leaders discussed the need to move away from siloed systems and towards what he believes is one of the most ambitious interoperability efforts in the world: the European Health Data Space (EHDS). Its goal is to enable seamless health data sharing across 27 sovereign nations that don’t share a common language.

While Steve was at the event speaking on a panel about the proof-of-concept J2 created for the Vulcan Interoperability Bridge, what really stood out to him were the conversations about data sharing and interoperability. Thus, he wrote up his observations in the article below: Bridging Borders with Data: Applying the HIE Model to the European Health Data Space, which details what it will take to turn policy ambition into operational reality and how lessons from the United States’ HIE model can help accelerate that journey for Europe. Drawing on nearly two decades of HIE experience and J2’s work with the HL7 FHIR Vulcan Accelerator, the article outlines a practical, scalable path forward for Europe’s cross-border data exchange.

2026 ASTP Annual Meeting

The recent ASTP conference was a welcome blend of pink hearts and friendly faces - many of whom we hadn’t seen since the Civitas Annual Conference back in September. Reunions were joyous, met with huge smiles and warm hugs. It was just what the doctor ordered to break up the hardest part of winter.

Highlights of the event include the Civitas networking coffee hour (Civitas knows how to gather the best people, no matter where we are!) and the closing panel session on The Tech (r)Evolution of Healthcare Research and Clinical Trials. This closing panel was a Who’s Who of advancing the quality of clinical trials, from Ashita Batavia, the Global Head of Study Innovation at J&J Innovative Medicine, to James McDermott, the Head of HL7’s Vulcan FHIR accelerator, which is dedicated to advancing the research to care continuum through FHIR. The panel was moderated by Stephen Konya, Chief of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships at the ASTP, one of our gracious hosts for the week.

Cat-entines Day

Madeline Rizzo, the woman behind the scenes of all the newsletters and the creator of what’s been dubbed ‘the whimsy graphics,’ recently adopted a cat, becoming a first-time parent! We’d like to take this moment to introduce you to Momo the cat, who journeyed from a shelter in Florida to his forever home in the Greater Boston area. Momo is 1 year old and enjoys chasing springs and chattering nonstop. Sources say they cannot confirm whether he will make future appearances in newsletter graphics; it’s yet to be determined.
